Soft Skills: The Development of a Medical Device: From the Idea to the Market

There is a massive impression in the academy sector that there is an easy transition between ideas and market. The second common idea is that selling a patent is also easy.  Where and what is the key to success in developing a medical device? The development of a medical device is not only the implementation of a technology that solves a problem for the health-related personnel but the combination of the idea with the discipline of following a quality system evaluation, the required documentation processes, the planning for the organization of a technical service and pre- and post-market activities, among many other factors. A poorly implemented good idea can lead to a high level of frustration and, above all, have dire consequences in patients' lives. A summary of the development processes for developing a medical device will be presented, pointing out the most critical elements to consider based on examples of our experience in various projects carried out with positive and negative results.
