Ander Abarrategi studied Biology at University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU) and at Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). During his PhD. stays at Hospital Clinico San Carlos (Madrid, Spain) and at UCM Tissue Engineering group, he developed tissue engineering approaches aimed to generate bone and cartilage tissues. Then, he gained experience at industry working as postdoctoral researcher at Noricum Implants S.L., a biotech company located in Madrid, Spain.

He came back to academy in 2011 in order to apply his know-how in tissue engineering approaches to cancer field. At Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) Cellular biotechnology unit, he focused his research on modelling sarcomagenesis and tumor microenvironment using biomaterials. Then, he moved to London Research Institute, later Francis Crick Institute (London, UK). There, he worked on bioengineering human bone marrow niche, and he applied these models to human acute myeloid leukemia (AML) xenotransplantation purposes. He was appointed as Research Associate at University College London (London, UK) and worked in a University-Biotech partnership, aiming to develop a gene therapy approach for congenital diseases.

Among others, Ander has been Juan de la Cierva Post-doctoral fellow, Sara Borrell Post-doctoral fellow, CR-UK Post-doctoral fellow and Braconnot Prize Best European Thesis Award. Now, he is Ikerbasque research fellow and Ramon y Cajal at CIC biomaGUNE.
