Since February 2015, Prof. Martín-Lomas is retired but still linked to the Center as an Advisor to the Scientific Director.

Manuel Martín-Lomas received his PhD Degree in Chemistry from the University of Seville and did his post-doctoral work at the Biophysics Unit of Unilever Research (The Frythe, Welwyn, Hert, UK). He is Research Professor of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (Spanish Research Council, CSIC) and has held several directorial positions in that Institution where he became Vice-President from 1992 till 1996. He has been Chairman of the European Carbohydrate Organization (1995-1997) and Member of the COST Chemistry Technical Committee that first defined chemical research priorities in Europe. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Member of the Real Academia Sevillana de Ciencias and serves as a member of the Editorial Board in several specialized journals. Most of his work has dealt with different aspects of synthetic and structural chemistry of biologically relevant carbohydrates. His main interest has been in the preparation and characterization of carbohydrate-based biofunctional nanostructures to investigate cell recognition, adhesion and signaling events.
