He left CIC biomaGUNEon June 2018 for a Professor position at Swansea University, UK.
Juan C. Mareque-Rivas was born and grew up in Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, Spain). He received his undergraduate education at the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow) and Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, where he conducted research projects in Physical Chemistry and Medicinal Inorganic Chemistry. He then undertook Ph.D. studies (1995-1998) in Inorganic and Supramolecular Chemistry at the University of Missouri in St. Louis under the supervision of Prof. Lee Brammer. After earning his Ph.D degree, he did two years of postdoctoral research in Bioinorganic Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the laboratory of Prof. Stephen J. Lippard. He began his independent research career at the EaStCHEM School of Chemistry of the University of Edinburgh (2000-2010). In January 2011, he joined CiC biomaGUNE as IKERBASQUE Research Professor and Group Leader, where his research program focuses on finding new bio-inspired chemistry based on molecular recognition, cooperativity and self-assembly and how it can be implemented in the development of improved therapeutics/diagnosis and methodologies for bio-/chemosensing.
