José Luis Toca-Herrera got is degree in (Fundamental) Physics at the University of Valencia in 1993. In 1994 he did a 12 month research training at Max-Planck Institute for Polymer Research (Mainz) in Wolfgang Knoll's group. Between 1996-1999 he worked on his PhD Thesis (Wechselwirkungskraefte und Struktur in Phospholipid Schaumfilmen) at the Max-Planck Institute of Colloids and interfaces under the supervision of Helmuth Möhwald, obtaining a PhD in Physical Chemistry at Potsdam University in 2000. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Technical University of Berlin in the group of Gerhard Findenneg (with R. v. Klitzing), at the University of Cambridge in the group of Alan Fersht (with Dr. J. Clarke), and in the Center for Nanobiotechnology (Vienna) in the group of Uwe B. Sleytr (as RTN Marie Curie fellow). In June 2004 he returned to Spain as a Ramón y Cajal Senior Research Fellow at the department of Chemical Engineering of the Rovira i Virgili University (Tarragona). He was group leader at the CICbiomaGUNE between 2007 and 2011and visiting professor at the Centre Nanobiotechnology (Vienna), the University of Leipzig and the Max-Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (Golm), and visiting scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer research (Mainz).
