Glycobasque 5 fifth annual international glycoscience symposium already underway

The 5th annual international glycoscience symposium is taking place today and tomorrow; it is organized by the Glycotechnology (Niels Reichardt) and Chemical Glycobiology (Jesús Jiménez-Barbero) groups at the BRTA CIC biomaGUNE (Donostia-San Sebastian) and CIC bioGUNE (Derio) centers, respectively. Glycoscience is becoming increasingly relevant in many areas of drug development, gene therapy, regenerative medicine and disease diagnosis, and offers huge opportunities for both basic and translational research.

The symposium taking place on November 18 and 19 in the main auditorium of the Gipuzkoa Science Park in Donostia-San Sebastian features seminars by leading experts in glycobiology, immunology and carbohydrate chemistry; it will be showcasing cutting-edge research by participants with expertise in cancer glycobiology, glycan synthesis, immune therapy, glycoconjugate vaccine design and analysis of carbohydrate-protein interactions.

Glycoimmunology in cancer and infectious diseases, tools and methods for analyzing carbohydrate-lectin interactions, the development of glycomimetics and advanced methods of carbohydrate synthesis feature in particular among the areas being covered at the symposium.

This symposium will be featuring world-class scientists who as keynote speakers are set to present their innovative work in glycoscience at Glycobasque 5:

- Henrik Clausen, University of Copenhagen, Denmark: “A Genetic Dissection Approach to Functional Glycomics”
- Geert-Jan Boons, University of Utrecht, The Netherlands: “Chemo-enzymatic synthesis to probe host-guest interactions”
- M.G. Finn, Georgia Tech, USA.: “Generation and Use of High-Affinity Anti-Glycan Antibodies”
- Sabine Flitsch, University of Manchester, U.K.: “Enzymatic tools for glycoconjugation”
