Envisaged Job Starting Date:

December 2026

A Laboratory technician position is available within the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Laboratory at CIC biomaGUNE. The successful candidate will assist the senior researchers of the group in developing therapeutic approaches for the treatment of cerebral stroke in animal models of disease.

A laboratory technician position is available within the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Laboratory at CIC biomaGUNE. The successful candidate will contribute to the preclinical evaluation of novel therapeutic agents in animal models of cerebral ischemia, with particular emphasis on the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model.

CIC biomaGUNE invites applications for a laboratory technician to join a multidisciplinary research project focused on investigating new therapeutic strategies for ischemic stroke. The project will combine experimental models of cerebral ischemia, behavioural assessment, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and quantitative data analysis to evaluate treatment efficacy and mechanisms of recovery.

The technician will work in a multidisciplinary environment involving preclinical neuroscience, experimental stroke models, animal MRI, and image analysis. The position provides access to CIC biomaGUNE’s advanced preclinical imaging infrastructure and offers opportunities to develop expertise in animal models of neurological disease, longitudinal MRI studies, and the evaluation of novel therapeutic interventions.

The principal responsibilities will include:

  • Handling, monitoring, and providing routine care for laboratory animals in accordance with established ethical and welfare regulations.
  • Performing and assisting with surgical procedures to generate MCAO models of cerebral ischemia.
  • Administering experimental treatments and carrying out post-operative monitoring and follow-up.
  • Planning and performing behavioural tests to assess neurological deficits, motor function, and functional recovery.
  • Assisting with and conducting preclinical MRI examinations, including animal preparation, anaesthesia, physiological monitoring, and image acquisition.
  • Processing, organising, and analysing behavioural, imaging, and experimental data.
  • Maintaining accurate experimental records, databases, study documentation, and quality-control procedures.
  • Preparing technical reports, experimental summaries, figures, and presentations.
  • Supporting the implementation and optimisation of experimental protocols.
  • Coordinating experimental activities with researchers, animal-facility personnel, and imaging-platform staff.
  • Ensuring compliance with laboratory safety procedures, animal experimentation regulations, and good research practices.
  • Contributing to the general organisation and day-to-day operation of the laboratory.
Required Education Level:

Required Education Level:

  • Degree or advanced vocational qualification in Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Biotechnology, Laboratory Sciences, Animal Health, or a closely related discipline.

  • Official accreditation for working with laboratory animals, in accordance with applicable regulations.

Required Skills/Qualifications:

  • Accreditation and demonstrated experience in the handling and care of laboratory animals.

  • Practical experience in experimental animal procedures, including animal preparation, anaesthesia, treatment administration, and post-operative monitoring.

  • Experience with non-invasive imaging techniques, preferably preclinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

  • Demonstrated experience in behavioural testing in laboratory animals, particularly in neurological or cerebrovascular disease models.

  • Ability to follow established experimental protocols and maintain accurate and complete experimental records.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to coordinate animal procedures, imaging sessions, and behavioural assessments.

  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and collaborative research environment.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English.

Required Skills/Qualifications:

Additional Skills/Qualifications that Will Be Valued:

  • Experience in experimental models of cerebral ischemia, particularly the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model.

  • Experience in animal surgery and perioperative care.

  • Knowledge of MRI data processing and quantitative image analysis.

  • Experience with image-processing or data-analysis software.

  • Basic knowledge of statistical analysis and data visualisation.

  • Experience preparing technical reports, figures, and summaries of experimental results.
