Jesús Ruiz-Cabello was awarded a degree in Chemistry from the Universidad de Granada in 1986 and later earned his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) in 1990 with honors. He has held a position as a Professor of Physical Chemistry at UCM since 2010, and also serves as a research professor at the CIC Biomagune through the IKERBASQUE program since 2018. He previously served as the Head of the Advanced Imaging Unit at the Spanish Cardiovascular Research Center (CNIC) from 2012-2017. Ruiz-Cabello is member of the Ciber of Respiratory Diseases (Ciberes) since 2008, and currently leads an associated research group and an Assistant Director of Research in this network.

Ruiz-Cabello has led several EU-funded initiatives and coordinated a Marie Curie European network project. Ruiz-Cabello has also participated in over 57 competitively-funded projects, 43 of which were IP or co-IP (including five European projects), and six as a coordinator (including one European project). He has authored or co-authored over 225 articles and book chapters, with a total of approximately 10,000 citations and a h-index of 52. He is also a co-inventor on eight patents, with seven European patents and one utility model. Together with two PhD students of the Lab, Ruiz-Cabello was a founding partner of Numio Technologies (Numio Tecnologias SL), a technology-based company that is still in operation. He has co-directed 15 theses and is currently supervising ten more. His former postdoctoral and Ph.D. students are now working in both academia and industry, with some leading their own teams at various institutions.
